EMAS Well Drilling

This is a method somewhat similar to the Baptist Method.   A hand pump is used to force water down the pipe while the cuttings come up in the annular space around the pipe.  This series of two videos also shows the installation of a hand pump.   Particularly interesting in the second video is the demonstration of how the pump valves work.   T

EMAS stands for Escuela Móvil de Agua y Saneamiento (Mobile School for Water and Sanitation).

A derrick is constructed and a pulley is mounted.  A mud pit is dug with a trench connecting the hole and the pit.  A hand pump is used to pump water from the mud pit into the drill pipe.  The drill pipe consists of a metal pipe with a fabricated drillbit on the end.  The drillbit is constructed so water can flow out of the bottom of the pipe.   Bentonite is added to the drilling water to prevent the collapse of the hole during drilling.

Drilling is accomplished by a team of men.  One pushes the pipe down and turns the pipe.  A second man pulls the pipe back up using the pully.  A third man pumps drilling fluid from the mud pit into a hose running into the drill pipe.

As drilling progresses additional pieces of pipe are added to the drill pipe.  A lever is substituted for the pulley when the hole gets deep enough the pipe becomes harder to lift.  The drilling fluid is changed as well.   When water bearing sand is encountered the drilling is stopped and the drill pipe removed.

A well screen is cut with a hacksaw.  A sock is slipped over the screen and secured to keep out fine sand particles.  The well screen and well casing are installed in the well.   The well is developed by pumping water into the well.   The annular space around the well casing is sealed with bentonite.

A valve is attached to a temporary pipe and this apparatus is used to develop the well or pump it until the water runs clear.

A hand operated pump is installed.  The pump uses a two ball valve.  The operation of the double ball valve pump is demonstrated with a cutaway demonstration model.   A base is constructed for the pump.  Local villagers are show easily operating the pump

Ok, here is the hard way to do it. Not recommended but interesting to watch! Note the layers this guy digs through.
